Spring Moves Cont. - Support
============================
As mentioned earlier, only one unit may occupy a given territory at a time. So
what happens when one unit tries to attack a territory where another unit is
holding? Normally, the attack would fail, and the attacking unit would stay
where it started from (see section H for more details). However, if the player
making the failing attack (or any player in alliance with that player) has
another unit bordering on the attack's destination, they can issue a support
order, which will cause the attack to win. Consider the following example:
German army in I: Belgium HOLDS
French army in e: Burgundy ATTACKS I: Belgium
Normally, this would result in the French army remaining in Burgundy, as
Belgium is already occupied. However, if the following order were also issued
on the same turn:
French army in d: Picardy SUPPORTS French army in e: Burgundy
ATTACKING I: Belgium
In this case, the support would cause the attack from e: Burgundy to win. (See
section H on Retreats for what happens to the German army.)
Support may be given for a holding unit also, thereby evening out the odds.
More than one unit may also support a unit in an attack or hold; the unit with
the most support wins the contest, with a tie always going to the holding unit.
If an attack order is issued on a territory occupied by a supporting unit, the
support is broken, and the unit is considered to be holding.
A support order will have no effect if the unit being supported is not also
issued the command specified in the support order. For example, in the
following set of orders:
Turkish army in X: Constantinople HOLDS
Russ'n fleet in wm: The Black Sea SUPPORTS Turkish army in X: Constantinople
ATTACKING W: Bulgaria
In the above listed orders, the Russian support order has no effect, because it
is not in synch with the Turkish order. This can also happen to your own
attacks; when you enter a support order for your own unit attacking, be sure to
double check that the unit being supported is attacking the same location as
the support order specified.
Support may be given to units belonging to other empires, as shown above, which
adds the element of team-work and alliances to the game. Choose your friends
well; backs were made to be stabbed...
